"Lord, he whom thou lovest is sick" John 11:3
They lay the object at his feet and leave it there. They do not say, "Come and heal him, come quickly, Lord." They know His love, they believe His wisdom. They leave the case in His hands: "Lord, He whom thou lovest is sick." They did not plead, but let their misery plead for them. Learn that urgency in prayer does not so much consist in vehement pleading, as in vehement believing. He who believes most the love and power of Jesus will receive the most in prayer.
"This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby." John 11:4
It brings out graces that cannot be seen in a time of health. It is the treading of the grapes that brings out the sweet juices of the vine; so it is affliction that draws forth submission, weanedness from the world, and complete rest in God. Use afflictions while you have them.
"When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was" John 11:6
He sees the end from the beginning. Known unto Him are all his works from the foundation of the world....He saw when Lazarus died, but the future was before Him as well. He knew what he would do, that the grave would yield up his dead, and that He would soon turn their weeping into songs of rejoicing. Therefore He stayed where He was, just because he was God. So, when Christ delays to help His saints now, you think this is a great mystery, you cannot explain it, but Jesus sees the end from the beginning. Be still and know that Christ is God.
If Christ seems to tarry past the time that He has promised; wait for Him, for He will come, and will not tarry. He has good reason for it, whether you can see it or not. And never forget that He loves even when He tarries. He loved the Syrophoenician woman even when He answered her not a word....Wait on the Lord, it is good to wait for Christ.
"Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep." John 11:11
Learn to search patiently into the meaning of Christ's words.....and go to Him for light. When you are reading in a dark room, and come to a difficult part, you take it the window to get more light. So take your Bibles to Christ.
"And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him." John 11:15
Christ orders all events for his glory. Learn that if you are His, He will work all things together for your good and His own glory. Learn to trust Him, then, in the dark, in the darkest frowns of providence, in the most painful delays. Learn to wait upon Him. "It is good for a man both to hope and to quietly wait for the salvation of God." He is good to the soul that waits for Him.
"Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God." John 11:27
This shows how faith and love spring up in the heart. Some of you seek for faith much in the same way as you would dig a well. You turn the eye inward upon yourself and search your heart to find if faith is there; you search amid all your feelings at sermons and sacraments to see if faith is there; and still you find nothing but sin and disappointment.
Learn Martha's plan. She looked full in the face of Jesus....she drank in His word: "I am the resurrection and the life'" and in spite of all she saw and felt, she could not but believe....Faith comes by hearing the voice of Jesus.
"And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always." John 11:42
Get alone with God. Spend as much time alone with God as you can every day; and then, in sudden temptations and afflictions, you will be able to lift your heart easily even among the crowd to your father's ear.
Outside my window......another hot summer day. It's been so hot and dry here.
I am thinking......about this verse from Psalm 4 that we sang in family worship recently,"Upon my heart, bestowed by thee, more gladness I have found Than they, even then, when corn and wine did most with them abound."
I am thankful for.......working internet!....and I spoke too soon. Right after I wrote that I lost my connection:-( But overall it has been working much better lately.
I am wearing.....a black skirt and green shirt.
Remembering.....this verse we talked about last night, "But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly...for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him." ~Matthew 6:6,8
Listening to.....the washer and dryer, the sounds of the children watching a movie.
I am going....to be tired today, I stayed up talking till almost midnight last night.
Noticing that....I feel in the mood to do some cooking.
I am currently reading.....my Bible, Matthew Henry's commentary on Joshua, and The Glory of Christ by John Owen. Last Tuesday I had the fun of going on a "book hunt" out in our shed.....I'm storing two different friends' libraries right now and am free to borrow and read any of the books. I was thinking the Lord really does provide all our needs, even giving me access to so many good books to read!
I am hoping......"According as the days have been, wherein we grief have had, And years wherein we ill have seen, so do thou make us glad." Psalm 90:15
On my mind......a thought brought up in family worship and in a conversation recently. We read in Matthew 21 about the multitudes crying, "Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest", then at least some of those same people, just a short time later were saying, "Crucify Him." The question that brings to mind is, do our actions match what we say? I can post great stuff on here, but what good does it do if I'm not living it?
Pondering these words.......a quote from Matthew Henry we talked about when we were driving home from church yesterday -- "...here Solomon shows the hand of God in all these changes; it is he that has made every creature to be that to us which it is."
Around the house....I'm doing laundry, and about to go take my walk.
One of my favorite things~my church.
A few plans for the rest of the week .....it's going to be a busy week! A normal day today, as far as I know, tomorrow is my day off at home, then in the evening instead of our normal movie night Jenny and I are meeting up with several other ladies from church at Cato for some shopping. I'll try to post some pictures on here later:-). Then all our normal work, piano lessons, church, menu planning, grocery shopping.....Mr E's parents are coming to visit at the end of the week, and we have a birthday party on Saturday.
From my photo journal ~I've been "playing" with some photo editing recently and made this wallpaper for my computer using a favorite verse.

Thou hast given him his heart's desire, and hast not withholden the request of his lips. Selah.
For thou preventest him with the blessings of goodness: thou settest a crown of pure gold on his head.
He asked life of thee, and thou gavest it him, even length of days for ever and ever.
His glory is great in thy salvation: honour and majesty hast thou laid upon him.
For thou hast made him most blessed for ever: thou hast made him exceeding glad with thy countenance.
For the king trusteth in the LORD, and through the mercy of the most High he shall not be moved.
Thine hand shall find out all thine enemies: thy right hand shall find out those that hate thee.
Thou shalt make them as a fiery oven in the time of thine anger: the LORD shall swallow them up in his wrath, and the fire shall devour them.
Their fruit shalt thou destroy from the earth, and their seed from among the children of men.
For they intended evil against thee: they imagined a mischievous device, which they are not able to perform.
Therefore shalt thou make them turn their back, when thou shalt make ready thine arrows upon thy strings against the face of them.
Be thou exalted, LORD, in thine own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power."
